about

Song about flux written by a woman

Backwards and Forwards is about frustration, unresolved feelings, but is also in celebration of the mystery of people and how wonderful they can be. I was having a tough time in my personal life and I didn’t realise how much I was looking for things that made sense or offered some higher ideals. I was also looking to refreshing, dynamic, creative people to help draw me through a time of suffering, flux and big decisions. It was a real lying in the gutter, looking at the stars time. It’s a composite of all the little mysteries that made me push for more, and the people that made sense to me lighting the way. They interested me because they spoke to my creative self, or to my ethics, to my humourous self, or to my passionate self, to my pure self, my inner child, my rational self, or to my humane self, or to my desire to put more discipline into my life to say improve my guitar skills. That’s from the intellectual angle, from the human angle it was equally about people being loving to me, and sincere - people I could trust at a time when I’d been burned a lot. This song is me crossing a bridge in my life, but it’s the flux before I do that. The song is all my own work, but Ben Baptie’s mix definitely crosses over into production because it elevated the song and had so much of its own character and boldness. Backwards and Forwards by Kintsugi San, is the music project of Susannah Moss from London, UK.

lyrics

Backwards and Forwards

You understood then
Do you understand now
How you walked to my path
How we walked out of town
Traces of DNA
You couldn’t explain
How I looked at you
What I saw

It was backwards
And forwards
It was backwards
And forwards
It was shall I adore this
It was known this before this

Did you wonder what
Caught me alight
Could you burn in the day
Would you burn in the night
Did you decode the face
Did you feel it for sure
Was a puzzle unwrangled
Better than before

It was backwards
And forwards
It was backwards
And forwards
It was shall I adore this
It was known this before this

Did I walk where I should
When I walked to you door
Had you known it again
Had you known me before
Did it make too much sense
Was my spine something raw
When you ate from my plate
Was it hard to ignore

It was backwards
And forwards
It was backwards
And forwards
It was shall I adore this
It was known this before this

Can the smallest affect
Be far too great
That you cannot forget
The mercurial ache
Beguiling they said
Resounds long on my moon
When you’ve eaten the earth
Can I come see you soon?

It was backwards
And forwards
It was backwards
And forwards
It was shall I adore this
It was known this before this
